September 2007 - 49 Dogs & 2 Birds removed from a Salem mobile home

From Fox 25 News:

BOSTON (FOX25, myfoxboston.com) -- A woman was arrested in Salem, N.H. after animal control officers found 49 dogs living in deplorable conditions inside her small trailer. FOX25's Diana Rocco has the details.

We have received many calls asking about adopting the dogs that have been rescued by Animal Control from a difficult situation. We want to thank everyone for their kind offers, desires to adopt and help out. None of the animals seized are currently available for adoption. The case will need to be resolved in the courts before there is any possibility of the dogs finding new and permanent homes. Until then, the birds, all puppies and adult dogs are receiving wonderful care in animal shelters and foster homes.

Please check our website regularly for updates on the situation. We'll list it here first, if and when the dogs and pups become available for adoption. When the dogs become available, you may fill out an application for adoption on this website as well.

Until then, we can certainly use assistance in helping these animals as well as the other homeless dogs, cats, and kittens that come through our doors. Here are the many ways you can help:

  • Monetary donations - This helps us to provide for veterinary assistance & the housing & care that is necessary for any animal that crosses through our doors
  • Gift Cards - Market Basket, Walmart, Petsmart, Stop & Shop, Shaws
  • Donate your time! We need volunteers -Our shelter is full with dogs, kittens and cats now. We need help cleaning kennels, walking dogs, socializing cats and kittens and answering our phones. If you are interested in volunteering, please fill out the application on line!
  • We could use lots of supplies - paper towels, bleach, garbage bags, liquid laundry detergent, white copy paper, stamps.
  • Dog food. The rescued dogs are being fed Hill's Science Diet Puppy Food, wet & dry, Adult Science Diet small bites dog food, Dog treats- cookies, soft & hard

We appreciate all the calls and concern for these animals. Anything you can do to help will be greatly appreciated!

Thank You

UPDATE:

10-14-07 A judge has granted a continuance in this case at the request of the defense attorney. The new date is November 27. This means that the animals will remain in our care until another court date. All of these animals are in safe foster care awaiting the outcome of the court. We want to thank the many families and shelters who came forward to help without knowing the duration of their commitment. For those who have inquired about the animals please be patient with this frustrating process and know that we will be prepared to respond to your inquires once we know the courts decision.

11-28-07 The judge issued another continuance to this case and the new court date set is January 9.  Please understand that until this case has been settled these dogs are the property of the court and will not be able to be adopted and in the case of an unfavorable ruling these dogs may never become available for adoption. This however does not deter us from providing the best care for each of these needy dogs. The cost for caring for these dogs are staggering and now that the case has been continued again we could use your help more than ever to help us help them.

Most Needed: Foster homes, shelter volunteers, gift cards to local supermarkets, GC Petco, GC PetsMart, Martingale Collars, Nylabones, Roarhide,  (not Rawhide), soft dog treats, Paper Towels, Bleach, Copy Paper, cash contributions

1-9-08 Victory! The court case was finally heard in Salem District Court and the dogs were turned over to our custody. The woman charged with with multiple infractions of the law was found guilty of five counts of animal cruelty and sentenced to 6 months in jail with 5 months suspended and 30 days to be served. She also was instructed by the judge to not own any animals for the next two years. The dogs have now become eligible for  full vetting and have been scheduled for spay and neuter appointments. The Salem Animal Rescue League has held 17 of these dogs since September. Nine of these dogs have been in a foster to adopt home since the beginning and will be adopted into the family that cared for them these last 3 months. The remaining dogs, once vetted will be available for adoption. We have received over 200 applications for these dogs and we will be carefully reviewing all the applications to determine the best placement of these dogs. At this time we are not accepting anymore applications. We appreciate your understanding.

Many people have called, sent applications or stopped by looking to adopt one of these dogs. Although we do not have as many dogs as applicants, we would like you to understand our adoption process. All applications are filed in an adoption request file by breed or size. These applications are kept on file for 6 months. Since our shelter handles multiple dog surrenders weekly, once we have evaluated an incoming dog we then go to the applications on file to determine if there is a request on file for that particular dog. Applicants would be contacted to inquire if the dog we have is of possible interest to their family. If so an appointment to meet the dog is set up. Once we have exhausted our applications we will put the dog up on our website to generate new interest/applications. We have recently decided to offer this service to make searching for a dog a little bit easier for people in our community.

We would like to thank everyone who has sent a contribution for the care of these dogs. Although we have won the custody of the dogs (Which was the most important part of this entire process) the cost of holding, transporting, feeding and vetting of these dogs for the last three months have not been recovered. Donations are still appreciated.

Happy Endings!
